The Jan Pentland Memorial Award

The Jan Pentland Memorial Award is an annual honour, recognising a member of the FCRC who has worked in service to the wider community. The award is named after one of our esteemed Life Members.

Jan worked tirelessly for many years to promote the cause of financial counselling in Victoria and throughout Australia. She was Chair of the national peak, AFCCRA (now Financial Counselling Australia, FCA). Her advocacy led to AFFCRA being funded for the first time in 2009.

Jan passed away in 2009, but she continues to be an inspiration to our sector.

The award is for an individual member of FCRC who has demonstrated excellence in financial counselling service to the wider community* above and beyond their normal duties as a financial counsellor.

Examples could include but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the welfare of the wider community in some way while working as a financial counsellor.
  • Providing financial counselling input to a community development activity
  • Helping a community recover from a natural disaster
  • *For the purposes of this award, ‘community’ is defined as either geographic community/local area, broader geographic community/Victoria/Australia/Internationally or community of identity or purpose regardless of location. For example indigenous community, women, youth, people affected by family violence, asylum seekers etc.

Nomination Process

Nominations for this award are currently closed.

  • Provide a summary of why you think your colleague would be a worthy recipient of the award.
  • Make sure you address the criteria, for example, by outlining how the nominee has helped their community over and above their job description as a financial counsellor.
  • Although you don't have to tell the nominee that you're nominating them, we encourage you to do so. This is to ensure that the person you intend to nominate accepts the nomination.
  • The nominated person doesn't have to be present at the awards presentation in order to win. The award can be accepted on their behalf. (It's up to the nominator to arrange this beforehand.)
  • Nominators may attach additional pages and supporting materials to the nomination form.
  • The board will be looking for examples which demonstrate outcomes that exceed expectations for a financial counsellor that is relatively new to the sector.
  • Once a decision is made no further correspondence will entered into as to how it was arrived at.
