How do I become a financial counsellor?

In order to practice as a financial counsellor in the state of Victoria, you need to hold a Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling).  Some employers will hire staff who are currently studying or are enrolled in the Diploma.

Financial Counsellor – .6EFT Part Time

An exciting opportunity exists to join our Melbourne Counselling Services (MCS) Counselling team as a Doorways Generalist Financial Counsellor.

The program is funded by The Salvation Army mission support. It employs 3EFT (financial counsellors and a team leader) to respond to generalist financial counselling needs of people in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne.

The position is an outpost to The Salvation Army Corps, Doorways Program. Training at MCS as required.

Melbourne Counselling Services (MCS) is based in Melbourne CBD and has a suite of services including: Sexual Assault, Generalist and Problem Counselling; Generalist and Problem Gambling Financial Counselling; and a range of Gamblers Help Services including Venue Support, Community Education and self exclusion.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Experience delivering thorough financial counselling to vulnerable clients
  • Excellent client engagement and support skills
  • Relevant Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling) qualification or working towards the required qualification
