Federal Budget ‘unconscionable’ on poverty caused by Newstart

9 May 2018

For immediate release

The Financial and Consumer Rights Council (FCRC) today expressed its grave disappointment with the Federal Budget, which focused yet again on middle class welfare while continuing to entrench poverty.

“The grossly inadequate Newstart allowance ensures many of the poorest Australians remain trapped in poverty”, said FCRC Executive Officer, Dr Sandy Ross. “This budget, outlaying so much windfall revenue, was a missed opportunity to lift the amount of the allowance so it provides meaningful assistance to Australians in hardship.”

“The inadequacy of Newstart is well established and widely accepted, yet the Government is actively diverting money into tax cuts and tax breaks for people who are relatively well off. This is unconscionable. Our Government continues to foster the damage to individuals, families and communities caused by preventable hardship and poverty”, said Dr Ross. “We urgently need to prioritise poverty relief above tax relief.”

FCRC is the peak body for Financial Counsellors in Victoria.

Financial counsellors provide information, support and advocacy to people in financial difficulty.
