Interview with Tahlia Brown, Mallee Family Care

Please tell us about your background.

My early years of working, after studying a Community Services Diploma, included working in the disability sector and for the education department. As my career progressed, I successfully attained a degree in Psychology, which led me into providing counselling for men and their families. I was lucky enough to work at an agency who values continuous professional development and I successfully completed a Graduate Diploma in Family Dispute Resolution. I enjoyed working as a FDRP and remained doing so for approximately 7-8 years. I tried my hand at working in Family Services; and after hearing the stories my clients spoke about regarding debt collection practices, payday lenders and various other financial struggles, this led on to wanting to become a financial counsellor. I was fortunate enough to obtain a Diploma in Financial Counselling and continue to work for the same agency I started at as a counsellor. And here I am.

What motivated you to pursue financial counselling?

It made sense transitioning from working with vulnerable families as a FDRP and Family Service worker to continue working with vulnerable families as a Financial Counsellor. I was able to transfer everything I had learned throughout my career and use this in my new role as a FC.

What are the unique aspects of your role or the area you work in?

No two cases are the same. Each story that is told is completely unique to that person and it is a privilege hearing them.

What has been your proudest achievement to date?

My education and being able to work with the many vulnerable people in the community.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the financial counselling sector?

The growing demand on the financial counselling sector and the increasing complexities clients face.

What has been the most valuable resource or advice you’ve received?

My colleagues are the most valuable resource ever. They are a wealth of knowledge.

And now the easy questions...
What TV show are you currently watching?

Suits, Handmaids Tale, and just finished Game of Thrones.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Finished reading the Outlander Series, all 9 books.

What artist are you listening to at the moment?

I listen to a variety of music but my most favourite would have to be Pink Floyd.
